3DR Robotics Solo The World’s Smartest Drone (Gimbal puchased seperate) (Free E.U Shipping depending on location)
The world’s best action camera.
The Solo drone is the first and only drone that delivers crisp HD from your GoPro straight to your mobile device, with in-flight control of the camera.
Best-in-class commercial-use sensor.
We worked directly with Sony to create this custom stills camera for mapping, survey work, and inspections. Available with Site Scan in 2016.
The world’s smartest drone is also the easiest to fly. With features like pushbutton flight and computer-assisted Smart Shots, Solo makes it easy for anyone to get professional aerial photos and video. Solo is powered by two 1 GHz computers for the best and smoothest aerial photography experience imaginable, including many world-first technologies and a host of built-in safety and support features. And it’s the only all-in-one drone to offer live video streaming in vivid HD from your GoPro® directly to your mobile device—at ranges up to half a mile.
The world’s first smart drone.
What makes it smart? Not only does Solo have the world’s most advanced Pixhawk 2 autopilot system, but it also runs two 1 GHz computers, one on the copter and one in the controller, connected via a powerful dedicated Wi-Fi signal carried by 3DR Link. This processing power enables Solo to do amazing things that no personal drone has ever been able to do.
Helpful brain science-y analogy:
You can think of these computers as Solo’s “frontal cortex”—the most advanced part of the brain. They handle all of Solo’s high-level functions, like Smart Shots, HD video transmission and exclusive GoPro control features. The autopilot—traditionally a drone’s only nerve center—now works sort of like Solo’s “brain stem,” responsible solely for the basic rudiments of flight. By splitting up the work like this, Solo dramatically reduces the likelihood of mechanical failure in flight and opens up a world of possibility for adding advanced capabilities and features.
What are its advanced capabilities?
Solo’s intelligence makes it possible for beginners and pros alike to capture professional-grade shots from day one. Its powerful and one-of-a-kind computer-assisted Smart Shots allow you to set up the exact shot you want, then let Solo execute the shot with the precision of a seasoned cinematographer; and with a list of Smart Shots to choose from, the perfect shot is always just a few taps away. Solo is also the first all-in-one drone to offer live streaming of HD video from your GoPro directly to your mobile device, as well as built-in HDMI for live broadcast in HD.
Cablecam: Lock Solo onto a virtual cable between any two points in space. Now you can freely pan and tilt the camera on your known-safe flight path, or let Solo memorize your first and last frames and smoothly pan the camera between them for you—all you have to do is tap “play.” Orbit: Solo can automatically circle any subject of your choosing, keeping it perfectly framed to capture an iconic “wrap-around” shot. Adjust the circle’s radius to get the exact shot you want, even midflight. Selfie: With one touch Solo will fly up and away from you, keeping the camera centered on you so the scenery around you expands in a dramatic aerial pullout shot. Then Solo will reverse that shot as it comes back to you, landing right where it took off.
Go completely hands-free! Solo can follow wherever you go, automatically keeping the camera on you to capture your every move.
Any other cool features?
A new ergonomic controller built specifically for aerial photography. Its video game-style design breaks from the clunky and complicated RC tradition, so it feels familiar to even new pilots. And in keeping with the video game theme, we even gave the controller a pause button—an airbrake you can hit at any time to stop Solo midflight.
A full-featured mobile app for both iOS and Android. Choose between a live view from the camera or a satellite view of your selected shot, control your GoPro, and even change how the controller responds to commands.
Add the Solo Gimbal and get stabilized cinematic video; full access to GoPro controls; stream HD video to your mobile device; even power your GoPro while you fly.
Solo is built to evolve: gimbal bay, accessory bay and swappable motor pods for easily integrating new technology and features as they’re invented. Your Solo won’t be obsolete in a year.
What new technology? Everything from new flight modes and features to first-party accessories, third-party accessories, and new gimbals and accessories.
I’ve never flown a drone.
Solo’s computers make flying easy for beginners and pros alike. Smooth and powerful satellite-guided flight ensures Solo’s position is always accurate, and Smart Shot modes keep Solo locked onto predetermined flight paths. It’s also got that great new video game-style controller for a feel that’s reassuring to any user. Plus the controller features one-button flight controls: Take off, land and return home automatically. And if you panic, don’t worry: There’s the pause button.
Can it carry a GoPro? (Gimbal puchased seperate)
Solo is built to maximize the GoPro experience. We work closely with GoPro in order to give you the best aerial photography experience imaginable. Together we came up with the world’s first gimbal that offers direct in-flight access to the GoPro controls: With just a click of a button on the controller, you can now start and stop recording and snap the exact photos you want during your flight—or change the GoPro settings from within our mobile app. Additionally, Solo is the world’s first drone that offers plug-and-play live streaming HD video from your GoPro directly to your mobile device. Solo even comes with The Frame from GoPro, pre-installed with vibration isolation, so you can get a beautiful HD video stream hassle-free, right out of the box.
I’m worried about flyaways. I’ve read a bunch of these stories, and they never end well.
Even though we’ve spent all of our efforts ensuring every Solo owner has the best possible user experience, we have to acknowledge that these things could happen. But don’t worry: Because Solo has built-in computers it can constantly monitor your flight. If you crash or lose connection, the app will prompt you to instantly create a service ticket, which you can submit instantly through your mobile device’s internet connection, wherever you’re flying. If the flight log shows that a system malfunction caused the loss of your copter—the dreaded “flyaway”—3DR will replace the copter and the gimbal if one was installed, and we’ll even give you credit to buy a new GoPro.
About the Solo app
Our mobile development team has focused its efforts on providing a user experience never before seen with a drone. The 3DR Solo app gives you access to live HD video from Solo along with fingertip control of many of Solo’s functions, including pushbutton flight commands and Smart Shots—Solo’s groundbreaking one-touch, one-take cinematic shot creation technology. It’s out today in the App Store, and will be available on Google Play this weekend. For compatibility, please see the bottom of this post.
GoPro® and HD video: Perhaps first and foremost, the app is your interface for the live wireless HD video feed from Solo. But to help you get the exact video you want, you’ll also have exclusive access to GoPro camera control and the suite of GoPro camera settings right through the app. This means that with the Solo app you’ll be able to do things like start and stop recording, adjust frame rate and field of view and even shutter speed, all through one powerful and simple workflow while you’re in flight—something no other drone delivers. Further, you can record your HD video straight to your phone’s camera roll for instant sharing.
Live and satellite views: While you’re flying the app also allows you to choose between the live view from the camera or a satellite view (think Google maps) of your selected shot. You can even combine the two, swiping out for a 1/3-screen satellite view while watching your live feed. This satellite view can be helpful not only in planning your flights or tracking Solo’s path, but also in setting certain Smart Shots exactly where you want them—more on that below. The satellite maps are “cacheable,” too, so if you’re heading out to a remote location where wireless connections might be scarce, just open the app in advance and when you’re in the field the app will recall the exact map for you to use, even without a data connection.
Smart Shot control: You can use the Solo app to execute Smart Shots. Just press “play” on the app and Solo will automatically execute the Smart Shot that you’ve set up, controlling both flight and camerawork at speeds that you can customize and adjust. The app also gives you fine-grain control over the Smart Shots you set. For instance, say you want to set a Cable cam shot over a bend in a river. You can fly Solo up there and establish the start and end points of your cable by using the controller to fly, position and set the copter. But you can also make fine-grain adjustments of the virtual paths (in Cable cam or Orbit) with your fingertip, right on the screen. Want to make sure you’re exactly over that part of the river bend you have in your head, but can’t quite get a good sense of perspective from where you stand on the bank? Use the satellite view to adjust your cable to your geographical liking. When you’re all set, you can customize the speed and altitude of the shot, so you get the exact kind of movement you’re after. In Orbit mode, the app enables you to adjust the radius and height of your orbiting track with your fingertip. And you can even change the distance and the angle at which Solo is following you, in real time.
Wireless updates: As drone technology evolves, your Solo won’t get left behind—instead, it will continue to evolve and get better and better. 3DR will continually roll out new features and updates for Solo via the Solo app. What’s more, the Solo app can update Solo, the controller, the gimbal and the autopilot—all wirelessly! Gone are the days of updating your drone by plugging into it.
Advanced settings: Digging a little deeper, the app also lets users adjust flight parameters such as speed and flight behavior, customize flight modes and even change how the controller responds to your commands. Solo is a versatile and powerful drone, and these qualities are easily and immediately accessible to experienced or adventurous power users who want them, right through the app. But don’t worry—the app won’t overwhelm you with these things up front. Your Solo experience can be as simple or as complex as you make it.
Instant access to customer support: Again, we designed Solo to address the whole user experience, which includes support. We’re super proud of the fact that the Solo app gives you instant access to technical support. If Solo detects that something went awry in flight, the app will prompt you to submit a service ticket, allowing you to send the saved logs of your last flight wirelessly from the app straight to customer support. If we see that you experienced any loss or damage caused by system error, we’ll fix or replace Solo for free—plus the gimbal and GoPro, if they were installed.
So, while the app itself isn’t the incredible flight technology that makes Solo do the incredible things it does, it is how you experience that magic. What will you see, and what can you do, now that you can look back down?
